Here’s how it works: people of all ages sign up and receive a “game board.” As you read whatever you love to read, keep track of how long you read and fill in each space. For some spaces, do an activity instead to branch out and try new things. Once you’ve completed your reading time, return to the library to gather your prizes. First, you’ll get a free book that you get to keep forever. Next, kids will get a finisher’s tile to add to our mural on the program room doors. Come back at the end of the summer to see it completed! Finally, you get one raffle ticket. You can choose to enter your ticket to win one of the prize baskets, which run the gamut from playdoh and board books to a cooking basket or our grand prize. One child and one teen or adult will win the grand prize, a full-fledged telescope to start their astronomy adventure. The telescopes are from Astronomers Without Borders, and half the purchase price is used to donate telescopes for astronomy education around the world. The telescopes were donated by the Columbus Kiwanis Club and Drexel Building Supply.
Once you’ve finished the summer reading program, you can choose to do the extra challenge, which encourages readers to branch out into other areas of reading and presents a true challenge to motivated readers. Each additional game board earns the finisher another prize basket entry ticket and a star added to the mural.
