Summer Library Program starts June 3!

This year's Summer Library Program theme is...

The Summer Library Program runs June 3 - July 26. We're kicking things off with Friday Night Out on June 3, 4-6pm on the library lawn. Children's entertainer David Landau will be playing music and making us laugh, Sassy Cow Creamery will be serving up free ice cream for kids, and you can sign up for the Summer Reading Program!

We'll be exercising our minds and bodies all summer long with fun programs, performers, and events for people of all ages! There will be something for everyone, including an Outdoor Obstacle Course for kids, Minute to Win It games for teens, and Fitness Fridays on the library lawn for a variety of ages. Watch for updates on the events calendar and on our Facebook page and pick up a newsletter with all the details soon!

Readers of all ages . . . kiddos, teens and adults. BE A READING CHAMPION! This year's Summer Reading Program is a face-off between the kids and the grown-ups. Children & Tweens will compete against Adults & Teens in an all-out battle to see who can complete the most reading/activity game boards between June 3 and July 26. Who will be the Reading Champions? It’s up to you! Winners get year-long bragging rights plus the chance to dunk a librarian at the Summer Library Celebration on July 26! You won’t want to miss that.

Celebrate Spring with a Downtown Story Walk

Spring has sprung! Celebrate the coming warmer weather with another Downtown Columbus Story Walk brought to you by Root for Columbus, a program of the Columbus Public Library. This time, the book will be When Spring Comes, the bright and cheery new title from bestselling husband-and-wife team Kevin Henkes and Laura Dronzek.

Beginning April 1, participating businesses will have pages from the book displayed in their front windows. Children, families, and people young and old can read the story by walking from storefront to storefront. The first page will be located at Carousel Antiques, and each page will direct you to the next one. The story will end at the Columbus Public Library where kids can enter a drawing for a spring-themed picture book prize pack.

A big thank you to the following participating businesses (listed here in walking order): Carousel Antiques, The Workshop, China King Restaurant, Berg Kitchen Design, Central Beauty Supply, H&R Block, AAA Insurance, Cardinal Embroidery & Screenprinting, Cardinal Comics & Collectibles, Richards Insurance, The Old Garage Barbershop & Salon, Sharrow's Downtown, Edward Jones, Farmers & Merchants Union Bank, and the Columbus Public Library.  This list will be available at the library to help you navigate through the story walk.

We hope to see you out and about reading When Spring Comes!

Four new & fun community projects from Root for Columbus volunteers

Root for Columbus recently held another terrific community potluck. It was a wonderful meeting of creative minds looking to add a few dashed of of fun to our community. It started with some good food and introductions. Everyone wrote ideas of things they may like to see happen in the community on sticky notes and placed them on themed poster boards: youth, art, community, and environment.

With great collaborative spirit, folks broke into four small groups to plan the details for one fun and feasible project. Here’s what Root for Columbus is working on this spring:

Spring Story Walk: The Spring Story Walk will be similar to the winter story walk project but with a new story to put some Spring in your step as you stroll downtown.

Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition: A sidewalk chalk artistry competition where any one and every one can show off their chalk art abilities. The competition will most likely be done near City Hall and the Senior Center, with a rain event hopefully being held inside the Senior Center.

Library Lawn Band Concert and Ice Cream Social: A throwback to the days when band concerts on the library lawn were a regular gather place for the community.

Davies Park 2: Davies Park is the small park by the Amtrak station. Some months ago a Root For Columbus group cleaned up the park. This spring the group will be collecting donations and pledges at the Columbus Arbor Day Celebration on April 30 in support of a park clean-up on May 7 and a mass flower planting on May 14.

Stay tuned, more
