In November 1912, the beautiful Prairie Design building at the corner of West James Street and Dickason Boulevard was erected to be Columbus’ brand new Public Library. It was a gem then, as it is now, 100 years later.
To commemorate the Centennial, we are adding a Columbus Local History Collection to the library’s holdings. This historical collection will be a permanent collection available for generations to come. It will be easy to access and will showcase particular items of interest. We have a place of honor chosen to house the collection and are now in need of some specialized carpentry to help outfit the space and show off those more valuable materials.
Chief among those important items is a Columbus area Civil War Registry, full of handwritten military records and final words of dying soldiers. It is a genealogist’s dream and the library wants you to see it. Starting in November it will be displayed under glass for all to view. In early 2013, high quality photos of the pages will be available electronically and a transcription of the entries is slated for later in 2013.
Please help commemorate the Centennial of the Columbus Public Library building with a donation to the Columbus Local History Collection. The library is proud to maintain historical records of Columbus. Your contribution toward the $3,000 goal helps us renovate a new space with beautiful custom displays.
